At St Mary's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, faith extends beyond the liturgy.

On weekends, classrooms fill with children learning Greek — not only grammar and vocabulary, but songs, poems, histories, and the layered story of a community that crossed seas and borders. The St Barnabas Greek Supplementary School operates within the cathedral’s orbit, reminding us that churches in diaspora are rarely only places of worship. They are schools of language. Archives of memory. Spaces where identity is practised aloud.

On these walls, one can see references to the heroes of EOKA that peak to another layer of collective remembrance. For many Greek-Cypriot families in London, the narrative of anti-colonial struggle, independence, and displacement is not distant history but it is intergenerational memory. In Camden Town, Greece and London meet in stone.

The All Saints Greek Orthodox Cathedral began life in 1824 as the Camden Chapel — designed by William Inwood and Henry Inwood, the same architects behind nearby St Pancras New Church. Inspired by Classical Greece, its tower echoes the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Plaka — a fragment of Athens reimagined in Regency London.

After the Second World War, as Greek-Cypriot migration reshaped North London, Metropolitan Germanos responded to the community’s need for a second Orthodox church. In 1948, on Palm Sunday, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated here. An Anglican chapel became an Orthodox cathedral — continuity through transformation.

Today, the galleried interior is dominated by a magnificent carved icon screen, crafted in 1974 by Chrysanthos K. Taliadorou of Nicosia. The iconostasis separates yet unites — framing the apsed sanctuary while narrating theology in gold and pigment. Russian-attributed main icons, Cypriot stylistic echoes in the upper register, Flemish or North German stained glass in the apse — layers of Europe gathered under one London roof.

This building carries many histories:
Regency ambition.
Wartime damage.
Post-war migration.
Diasporic devotion.

The St Andrew Greek Orthodox Cathedral is not simply decorated — it is enveloped in iconography. Every wall, every vault, every ceiling surface participates in a visual liturgy that transforms architecture into sacred narrative.

These paintings were executed with extraordinary devotion by the Athenian master iconographer Dr Michael Akalestos, who carried the discipline of Byzantine tradition into a London cathedral. Biblical scenes, prophets, saints, and martyrs do not function as ornament; they structure the spiritual geography of the space.

In the Byzantine tradition, icons are theology in pigment. They collapse time — placing Old Testament prophets beside New Testament revelation, early martyrs beside contemporary worshippers. Standing beneath these ceilings, London becomes momentarily Constantinople; Kentish Town becomes part of a much older sacred cartography.

In the heart of Soho once stood the first Greek Orthodox church in London — a spiritual anchor for merchants, sailors, and families who carried their language, faith, and identity across the Mediterranean to this city.

In 1674, a number of the London Greek community led by a priest Fr. Daniel Voulgaris petitioned the Privy Council, King Charles II advisors, for permission “to build a church in any part of the city of London, where they may freely exercise their religion according to the Greek Church”.

Permission was granted in 1675 and building work began in 1677, with the completion of a small church in 1681, dedicated to the Assumption of the All-Holy Mother of God. The main driving force in its establishment and raising funds being the Metropolitan of Samos, Joseph Georgerinis from the island of Milos.

The church was located at the then edge of the city in Soho in Hog Lane, off Charing Cross Road, which eventually became and is now known as Greek Street.

However, at the time the majority of London’s Greek community lived and worked in the City and around the ports of London. The church’s location was too far away from where Greeks were generally concentrated; so the Orthodox congregation were unable to attend Liturgy regularly or support its function. The church ended up being sold in 1682 and was taken over by French Protestant Huguenots who had fled to England as refugees.

William Hogarth's painting, "Noon, L'Eglise des Grecs, Hog Lane, Soho," is giving us a seconc glimpse of the church serving the Hugenots community.
